Instagram vs Facebook vs TikTok: Where a Local Business Should Actually Post

You cannot be everywhere. Which platform brings customers through the door for a local service business, which one is your Google, and which one is optional.

The advice to "be on every platform" was written for brands with a team. For a local business the honest question is: where do people who could walk into my shop this week actually look? The answer is different for a taqueria and a physical therapist. Here is how to choose.

Facebook: the local one

Facebook is where your town lives. Local groups, event pages, "does anyone know a good..." posts, and the demographic that books services and eats out on weekends. For most local service businesses Facebook is not optional, and the posts that work are the least polished: a photo, a plain sentence, an answer in a neighborhood group.

Instagram: the proof one

Instagram is where a new customer goes to check you out before they book. They found you on Maps or from a friend, and now they want to see the work. Your grid is a portfolio. Your reels are the demo. Your Stories are the sign that you are open and active.

TikTok: the reach one

TikTok gives a small account the most reach for the least effort, but that reach is mostly not local. A viral video puts you in front of a million people who live nowhere near you. It is worth it for two kinds of businesses: those that ship or sell online, and those in cities big enough that one percent of a million is still a lot of nearby people.

Google Business Profile: the one you forgot

Not a social network, but the most important place a local business can post. Your Google listing shows up when someone searches "nail salon near me," and it has a posts section almost nobody uses. A photo and two sentences a week there is worth more than a viral TikTok to a business that lives on foot traffic.

The decision in one line

Facebook for the town, Instagram for the proof, Google for the search, TikTok if you have time left. Make one set of reels a week and post it to all of them. The filming does not change, only the caption.
