How to Get Customers to Send You Photos and Videos You Can Post
Customer photos are the most trusted content a local business can post and the cheapest to get. The ask, the timing, the permission line, and what to do with them.
A photo a customer took of your food, their new haircut, or their clean car outperforms anything you shoot yourself, because a stranger believes another customer before they believe you. Most local businesses get almost none of these. Here is how to get a steady supply.
Ask at the peak moment
The moment to ask is when the customer is happiest, and it is earlier than you think. For a salon it is the mirror reveal, not checkout. For a restaurant it is when the plate lands, not when the check does. For a detailer it is when they walk up to the car. Have a line ready for that moment.
The line
"If you post that, tag us so we can share it." Ten words. It does three things: gives permission to post, asks for the tag, and promises a share, which is the reward they actually want. Do not ask them to "leave a review and follow us and tag us." One ask.
Make it easy to tag you
- Your handle on the receipt, the mirror, the menu, the invoice email, the pickup bag.
- A small sign at the spot where people naturally take the photo: the good-light corner, the finished car, the display case.
- The same handle on every platform so nobody has to guess.
Ask for the permission you need
A tag is not permission to reuse. Before you repost a customer's photo to your own grid, reply: "Love this, mind if we share it on our page?" Ninety-five percent say yes in an hour. Keep the reply as your record. For faces of children, always ask the parent directly.
What to do with them
- Repost to Stories the same day, with a thank-you. Fast and low effort.
- Collect the best into a monthly "your photos" carousel for the feed.
- Use a great customer clip as the opening second of your own reel.
- Save the ones with a quote for your Google Business Profile and website.
Small incentives that work
You do not need a contest. "Tag us and we will feature you" is enough for most people. If you want more volume, a monthly draw for a free service among everyone who tagged you costs one service and produces dozens of posts. Avoid discount-for-a-post schemes; they attract the wrong posts and can run into platform rules.
