Should a Small Business Hire a Social Media Manager or Use AI? A Cost Breakdown

What a freelancer, an agency, an employee, and an AI tool actually cost a local business per month, what each one does for that money, and which one fits which stage.

At some point every owner asks the same question: can I pay someone to make this go away? You can. The answer costs somewhere between forty dollars and four thousand a month depending on what "this" is. Here is what each option actually buys, so you can pick by stage instead of by sales pitch.

Option 1: Do it yourself

Cost: zero dollars, four to eight hours a week. The real cost is that the hours come out of evenings, and the posting stops the first busy month. Works when you are pre-revenue or genuinely enjoy it. Stops working the moment you have staff to manage.

Option 2: A freelancer

Cost: typically a few hundred to a couple of thousand a month for a local business. A good one films with you monthly, edits, writes captions, and schedules. The variation is enormous. The best freelancers are fully booked; the available ones are often new. You still have to brief them, approve everything, and re-explain your business when they leave.

Option 3: An agency

Cost: usually starting in the low thousands a month with a contract. You get a team, a strategy deck, and reports. For a single-location local business this is almost always too much money for too generic a result: the work is done by a junior who has never been to your shop, and your account gets the same templates as their other forty clients.

Option 4: A part-time employee

Cost: wages plus your time to manage them. The big advantage is that they are in the building and can film real moments daily. The disadvantage is that "social media" becomes a role you now have to hire for, train, and replace. Good fit once you have multiple locations or a real marketing budget.

Option 5: An AI tool

Cost: typically tens of dollars a month. What it does well: generates ideas specific to your business, writes captions in your voice, schedules everywhere at once, and never forgets to post. What it cannot do: film your shop. Someone still has to point a phone at the work. The best tools are honest about that and make the filming as small as possible. The worst ones generate stock-looking images and call it content.

The hybrid most local businesses land on

You film ten minutes a week. Software plans what to film, a human editor cuts the clips, the AI writes the caption, you approve it from your phone, and it posts everywhere. This costs a fraction of a freelancer, keeps the content real because it is your shop on camera, and removes the two steps owners quit at: deciding what to film and editing.
