How Often Should a Small Business Post on Instagram in 2026?

The honest answer for a local business with no marketing team: a cadence you can keep for a year beats a cadence you can keep for a month. Here is the number and how to hit it.

Every guide gives a different number. Daily. Three times a week. "As often as you can." For a local business where the owner is also the marketing department, most of that advice is written for brands with a content team. Here is what actually works when it is you and a phone.

The number: three posts a week, plus Stories most days

Three feed posts a week is the point where an account looks alive to a new visitor and stays manageable for one person. Two of the three should be reels. Stories can be anything, filmed in the moment, and take ten seconds each.

Why not daily? Because daily is what you do for three weeks and then abandon, and an account that posted every day in March and nothing since April looks worse than one that quietly posts every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Consistency beats frequency

Instagram shows your posts to your followers first. If they engage, it shows the post to more people. A predictable rhythm trains your regulars to expect you, which means more of them see and engage with the first hour of every post. The algorithm rewards the account it can predict.

How to actually hit three a week

  1. Pick two filming windows of ten minutes each. Tuesday morning before open and Friday during the afternoon lull work for most service businesses.
  2. Film raw clips only. Do not edit while you film. Do not post while you film. Just collect.
  3. Batch the editing or hand it off. The editing is where owners quit, not the filming.
  4. Schedule the week in one sitting. Three posts, three slots, done until next week.

What counts as a post

When to post

For local businesses the best time is when your customers are deciding, not when they are buying. Restaurants: late morning and late afternoon. Salons and services: Sunday evening and Monday, when people plan their week. Gyms: early morning and 8pm. Test two slots for a month and keep the one that gets more saves and shares.
