The Reel Playbook

How to make reels people actually watch.

Five rules. No trends, no dancing — just what gets your business seen and gets people in the door.

Step 1: Organic entertainment — not ads.

Nobody opens Instagram to learn or to watch your promotions. They open it to be entertained. So don’t lead with a sale or a lesson. Post organic videos that give people an interesting look inside your business — the work, the moment, the thing only you see every day. That’s what earns the watch.

Step 2: Post 5 organic, then 1 promo.

Look at how every platform works: a little advertising mixed into a lot of content. If they hit you with an ad every post, you’d close the app. Your feed is no different. For every promotional or educational post, give people five organic, entertaining ones first. Earn the attention with the five — then the one that sells actually gets people in the door.

Step 3: When one works, run it back.

Found a video that hits? Post it again. And again. A format that works isn’t a one-off — it’s a series. For your viewers it’s like their favorite show on Netflix: they check back for the next one. Repetition isn’t lazy. It’s how people learn to recognize you.

Step 4: Entertainment isn’t “funny.” It’s real.

Entertainment is whatever your viewer wants to watch — and it’s almost never what you think. You don’t have to be funny. You have to be real. Show your face. Talk to people like a person. That’s why a restaurant that films itself serving customers pulls 100 million views, and a guy who films mowing lawns builds millions of followers — over and over. It’s not a joke. It’s real, and real is watchable.

Be real. Not funny.

Step 5: Don’t waste your time.

Instagram, Facebook and TikTok are competitive. Be ready to get zero views on your first posts — that’s normal. It takes a couple of months to build real traction. So don’t waste your time and money filming if you’re going to give up in week two. Only start if you actually want to grow — if you’ve got big plans for your business, something to prove, or an impact you want to make. If you’re not in it for real, you’ll quit. Go in knowing that, and you won’t.
